Toshiba MP3 Players-Gigabeat Portable Media Center and Mobile Audio Player

Sunday, September 23rd, 2007

What exactly does something with a 60GB hard drive expect to do, with 10 days of video, thousands of photos, and over 40 days of CD music? With the exceptionally large hard drive with the 2-3/8″ screen, Toshiba is doing well to pick up its name in regard to the MP3 players. Preloaded with Window’s Mobile software, and the intuitive interface on the Media Center edition of Windows XP, any television show can be translated immediately onto the gigabeat. Many features are available, such as the WMV 7, WMV 8, and WMV 9 video files - and the JPEG display images. It plays MP3, WMA, protected WMA and WAV audio fields. Its 60GB holds up to 2,000 hours of home services, up to 240 hours of movies, built-in FM tuner with 30 preset stations, high-speed USB interface with cable. It offers up to 20 hours audio or 4.15 hours video, with a built-in rechargeable lithium ion battery. With Toshiba’s type of reputation, a person expects them to put out the same type of product. Nothing mind-blowing or earth shattering, but something that does exactly what you want it to. This is why the Toshiba Gigabeat Portable Media Center is so wonderful. But on the other hand, its Gigabeat Mobile Audio Player is less than wonderful. If you are wondering what customers are talking about, lets start with the screen. Toshiba produced a great 2.2″ screen that views as well as any digital media player on the market today. Why is this bad? Because the Toshiba Gigabeat Mobile Audio Player is just that, an audio player. You can view photos, but no video. What a waste of a big time screen.Next, a place where an MP3 player can be labeled great or horrible, is the navigation system. Toshiba has designed a PlusTouch system that forms a cross in the middle of the player. Like Apple, Creative, and everybody else, Toshiba believes in their system, but this one is weak to say the least. For starters, sometimes it reads your actions for something completely opposite of what you intended (pausing when you attempt to turn up the volume, etc.).But worst of all, the quality of the software is less than desirable. It does offer the use of Windows Media, but this is almost impossible to do at times. Toshiba offers the Gigabeat Room Management Software that inexplicably attempts to reformat all MP3 files into a .SAT format. This format is almost unreadable by a computer which causes a major problem if you are looking to send your files back to your computer. But as its been said before, when it comes to electronics it is truly “to each their own”. And each person may find that they enjoy what Toshiba has to offer in their player. However, Toshiba’s Gigabeat Mobile Audio Player seems to be lagging behind quite significantly in the digital audio race.Check out http://www.mp3playertop.com/ for more articles on free downloads itunes and sony mp3 players.

Buying an HDTV - The 5 Basic Steps

Saturday, September 22nd, 2007

Shopping for a new HDTV set can be confusing and intimidating, but if you break the process down into smaller parts, it will start to make sense. The main factors to consider are: Budget Range Screen Size Style (Plasma, LCD, etc.) Special Uses Options Budget Range First things first. HDTV costs are most closely linked to screen size, but also to display type, picture quality, and brand name. You’ll have to read the reviews of individual sets to get all the details, but here is a general idea of what you will get in each price range:Under $500: 20 inch and smaller LCD, HD-Ready (without tuner) HDTVs. 15 inch integrated tuner HDTVs. You might find some up to 27 inches in certain brands, like ViewSonic and Olevia. $500 to $1000: 32 inch and smaller LCD, integrated tuner HDTVs, 50 inch and smaller DLP HDTVs. $1000 to $2000: 46 inch and smaller LCD, 50 inch and smaller Plasma, and 65 inch and smaller DLP HDTVs. $2000 to $4000: 52 inch and smaller LCD, 60 inch and smaller Plasma, and 75 inch and smaller DLP HDTVs.Another thing to consider is the substantial discounts you can find on last year’s models. HDTV technology is updating all the time, just like computer technology. If you can deal with not having the very latest technology, you can find some amazing deals- 40 percent off, or more, on sets only 18 months old.Screen Size Getting the right size HDTV for your viewing space is important. In the old days, the right size TV was the biggest one you could afford, but today many people can afford a TV that is so big it dominates the viewing room, and they are forced to sit so close that imperfections in the screen, or individual pixels, are visible.Another problem with sitting too close to a widescreen HDTV is that your eyes will be shooting back and forth across the screen, as if you were watching a tennis game from center court. These quick eye movements can make you dizzy and give you a headache.First, look at the area where you’ll be watching TV, and measure the distance from the TV screen to the center of your couch, bean bag, log, or whatever you will sit on. This distance should be 2 to 4 times the diagonal measurement of the screen. So, a 24 inch set would be good for viewing from 4-8 feet, a 50 inch set would be good for a range of 8 to 16 feet, and a 60 inch set would work well from 10 to 20 feet away.Display Style The most popular types of flat screen HDTV these days are LCD, plasma and DLP. Cathode-Ray TVs are still around, and they usually have a great picture, but the larger CRTs are extremely heavy and bulky. They are slowly losing out to the flatter-profile technology.LCD stands for Liquid Crystal Display, and is the same type of screen used in most new computer monitors (you are likely looking at an LCD right now), cell phones, and many other devices. LCDs work the best when you want a medium or small set, need a lighter-weight set, or watch TV in a well-lit room.Plasma sets have a glass screen (as opposed to LCD’s plastic) with an ionized gas sandwiched behind it that creates a picture when it is excited by electric charges. Plasmas have a slight edge over LCD in picture quality, especially when viewed from an angle, but may have more screen glare in bright light.DLP stands for Digital Light Processing. These sets use tiny oscillating mirrors behind the screen to create a picture. DLP sets are technically rear-projection TVs, but are usually quite flat. They are cheaper than LCD and Plasma in the large sizes but are often a little too heavy and thick to hang on a wall.Special Uses What do you plan to do with your HDTV? Are you a gamer, a sports fan, or a movie buff? Different types of sets are ideal for slightly different things.DLP TVs often have very bright displays, but can lose detail in very dark scenes. This makes them great for watching sports, news, and outdoor scenes, but not as good for movies with lots of dark images. Plasma TVs have a great picture, and still look great when viewed from a wide angle- no darkening or color shift. However, a room with lots of windows may create glare problems on the Plasma’s glass screen. LCD TVs are much brighter in bright light, so they are well suited for daytime viewing in lighted rooms. In a brightly lit room, an LCD TV can actually look better than a good plasma TV. And LCDs have better, sharper resolution in the mid sizes, so they are ideal to use as an extra monitor for your computer.Options All HDTVs come with a slightly different package of features. A tuner is necessary to receive over-the-air broadcasts. Since they add expense, and many people only use their HDTVs for watching cable, satellite, DVD, video game or computer input, they are not always included. Look for an integrated ATSC tuner, or buy an external tuner to get over-the-air broadcasts.Good speakers are nice to have incorporated into the HDTV. But, if sound quality is really important to you, you’ll be better off with high quality external speakers.Connections are important. You’ll want at least 2 HDMI inputs to hook up to a cable box, DVR, or DVD player. Other types of connections, like component and S-Video cable inputs, are handy in case you want to use external components that use these cables. And if you intend to use your HDTV with your digital camera, you will need a USB or memory card input.Getting Help Using an online HDTV buyer’s guide can help, too. Find one that balances sufficient attention to detail with a big-picture view.About the AuthorTom Webster writes for FlatHDTV.net, an online guide to the HDTV revolution.

Why Search Engines Cannot Answer All Your Queries?

Saturday, September 22nd, 2007

Do you search with an embedded syntax? If you do, you’ll be able to mine valuable information from search engine repositories. Let me take an example. Suppose you’re looking for non-reciprocal link-givers for your web pages. What will be your search syntax? It may be something like “Suggest a link” +”keyword”. If you are looking for links for the keyword phrase “clay art”, your search query will be “Suggest a link” +”clay art”.Now, I am not a search syntax expert. I’ve learnt the above technique from Bill Hartzer’s article here. Bill provides good suggestions on how to look for potential link partners. What becomes apparent is that if you are not a search expert, you stand to loose out on valuable information from search engines. Many of us suffer from this disadvantage despite search engines’ help, such as this one from Google. While reflecting on this some time back, I started to realize that it is indeed less than often that I am really able to unearth solid relevant information from search engines. There are 2 main issues here. First is our ability or inability to squeeze out information from search engines. The second is search engine’s ability or inability to provide relevant information in response to your query. Listed below are some obvious hindrances that I’ve faced in my ‘search experience’. Readers are welcome to offer their experience.Search engines produce results based on search terms. If your search term doesn’t match that of a product’s website you ought to see, it’ll altogether elude your attention.Search results are in fact prioritized web pages. Since a webpage does not describe the full website, it is often possible that though you’ve arrived at the right website, yet you’re unaware that your information is available in another webpage. You may probably give the page a miss.Even if the ‘most-suitable’ product’s webpage does find its way in your search results, it may be embedded deep inside the results that appear. It’s hopeless to sift some 260,000 results or more to get your pick.Search engines are constantly in a flux, altering its algorithm now and again to remain in reckoning for maximum usage by surfers, thereby affecting search results. What are there today, are gone tomorrow. Many web pages are not optimized for top search results. After all, how many keywords/keyphrases can one optimize for? And then, once begun, one has to cling on to it, lest others ‘snatch’ the prized positions. Clearly, for many, such exercise is time-consuming and costly. All search engines are not equally popular everywhere. If Google is numero uno in US, many in continental Europe prefer MSN. Besides, many websites opt for PPC ads or other online ads in various lesser-known search engines and directories. Therefore to find your best deal, you need to extensively search at many places, which clearly is not a practical solution. In places where internet awareness is high, mass emailing, classified ads, press releases, etc. are some of the preferred promotion techniques for many, instead of search engine marketing. To economize cost vis-à-vis quick return, many websites with excellent products prefer offline advertisements to online promotion. In fast-changing web-scenario, if products or brands are sold and/or re-branded, or if the owner-companies loose focus, even best-selling items get heaped at the bottom, though still available online. It’s virtually impossible to locate them in search results. Many websites are too large to be fully indexed by search engine crawlers, or may be too slow to obvious discomfort of the crawlers.Just aiming top search ranking simply doesn’t ensure a product’s usefulness vis-à-vis your need. With proper optimization techniques, it is not difficult for any webpage to come on top in search results. Then again, for many websites, there is a mistaken priority to rank high in search results instead of providing quality information to the viewers. The bottom-line is that unless you plough through your searches with dogged determination and armed with a fine comb, chance is that search engines may not fetch you the answer you want, and want it now! In my experience, on an average, 6 times out of 10, I don’t get the *ONE* I want. And then consider the time it takes. Not many of us can or will spend an entire evening or two for just one nagging query. Also, few searchers are able to query intelligently since searching with requisite syntax is a specialization itself. To add to woe, this varies from one search engine to another. No wonder, even Google charges you for specific searches. In an extension of this article, I plan to next look at the various options that are now available to get information on the web.Partha Bhattacharya is an experienced web content provider. Partha’s blog on web marketing is a big help for small website owners.
